The U.S. higher education system consists of three types of institutions, Professional Education and Training Institutes (PET), Community Colleges and Universities. PETs provide technical and vocational training to students who want to join the workforce after completing their school education. PETs generally offer vocational and technical training in the fields of health sciences, accounting, technology, computer science etc. A student is awarded a diploma or an associate degree on successfully completing training at a PET. The total time taken to complete training at a PET ranges from 6 months to 4 years. If a student does not want to undergo vocational training and does not want to join a university, then he or she can join a Community College. A Community College mainly offers a 2 years diploma/associate degree in the fields of social sciences, humanities, pure sciences, engineering, business management. However, there are also some Community Colleges that offer 4 years bachelor’s degrees. A student who has successfully completed a 2 years diploma/associate degree from a Community College can move to a University to complete a bachelor’s degree. Furthermore, a student who has completed senior high school (senior secondary education) can directly join a University. Universities, in the United States, offer 4 years bachelor’s degrees, 1-2 year’s master’s degrees and PhDs. Students from India generally go to the United States for a master’s degree, however in the past years, increasing number of students, from India, have also started going to the U.S. for bachelor’s degrees. Thus, in the following paragraphs we will give a brief overview of some of the important Universities in the U.S. We will also briefly explain the process of getting a student visa in order to go to the U.S. for higher education.
Large number of Indian students go to the US for higher education. In 2018, approximately 200,000 Indian students went to the U.S. for further studies. Out of the approximately 200,000 students, nearly 65 percent, went to the US for master’s degrees. Therefore, we’ll look at the master’s level entry requirements at two American Universities in the top 100 world rankings (QS and Times Higher Education) and at one University ranked in the range 751-800 (QS). Furthermore, we will also look at the admissions process at a popular Liberal Arts College in the U.S., which primarily offers undergraduate degrees.
Similarly, admission to the Master’s (MS) in Computer Science at the elite, University of Chicago also requires GRE and IELTS/TOEFL scores. However, emphasis is not placed on undergraduate GPA, instead, the University focuses on the scores attained in the quantitative reasoning section of the GRE exam. A score of 151 in the verbal reasoning section and a score of 162 in the quantitative reasoning section is required to be considered for the MS Computer Science program. Similarly, an overall, minimum IELTS score of 7 with scores of 7 in each of the four sections is required. On the other hand, an overall, minimum online TOEFL score of 90 is required. Apart from the aforementioned information, the candidate will also have to submit 3 letters of recommendation (LoR), CV, essays and transcripts of previous educational qualifications.
Florida International University is a well reputed University ranked in the range 751-800 by the QS World University Ranking. Admission to a master’s program at Florida International University requires a minimum GPA of 3.00 at the bachelor’s level. Furthermore, a minimum, total IELTS score of 6.5 is required or a minimum online TOEFL score of 80 is required. Letters of recommendation, letter of intent, and resume are to be submitted along with the aforementioned transcripts and test scores.
Dartmouth College is a well-known Liberal Arts College in the U.S. Dartmouth primarily offers undergraduate degrees, though it also offers postgraduate degrees such as MBA, MD, MS etc. For getting admitted to an undergraduate (bachelor’s) program at Dartmouth, an applicant from India will have to take the SAT or ACT exam. Dartmouth assesses the senior secondary marks of an international candidate in terms of how he/she performed in comparison to other students who took the same exam under the same education board. For example, an Indian student who took the CBSE senior secondary class 12 board exam will be assessed on the basis of how he/she performed within the CBSE board exam system. International applicants have to take the IELTS or TOEFL exam. An international applicant needs to get a minimum overall score of 7 in the IELTS or a score of 100 in the online TOEFL exam. Apart from the aforementioned transcripts and test scores, a candidate will also be required to submit a writing supplement, which essentially contains detailed answers to questions asked by the admissions committee. A peer recommendation also needs to be submitted. A peer recommendation is essentially a written statement supporting your candidacy. This recommendation should be written by someone whom you know and whom you consider to be your peer.
