ABOUT IELTS

IELTS- The International English Language Testing System- is one of the most respected testS to examine the proficiency in English of those candidates whose mother-tongue is not English. It evaluates all the four skills, viz, reading, writing, listening, and speaking. This test is useful for those people who want to study, work, and/or live in countries such as the UK, the USA, Canada, Australia, and New Zealand, where English is the mother-tongue of most people.

IELTS is recognized by most of the international organisations. It is also recognized by universities/ institutions, professional bodies, and government agencies in the UK, the USA, Canada, Australia, and New Zealand, It is recognized as a test for admission to universities/institutes, and for getting student visa, work visa, etc. to the countries mentioned above.

There are two types of IELTS tests, called Academic Module, and General Training Module. The Academic Module is used for undergraduate and postgraduate studies, and for a professional job offered in these countries. The General Training Module is used for vocational training (not at degree level), or for immigration purposes. The listening and speaking tests are common for both the Modules, only reading and writing are different for the General Training Module.

Academic Reading

Time: one hour

There are three different texts which are graded from the easiest to most difficult. There are various types of questions asked at the end of each text. The question types can be of the following types. They can be multiple choice, true/false/not given, matching information, matching headings, matching sentence endings, sentence completion, notes, summary, completing a table/flow chart, labelling a diagram, and short-answer questions. Please note that each paragraph may be tested with some of the above-mentioned questions.

Time: one hour

There are two question to be answered. The first question should be answered in 20 minutes and the second in 40 minutes. The first task is based on the information presented in a table, diagram, map, pie-chart, or bar diagram. You are required to write a paragraph in 150 words. You must write a discursive essay in 250 words on a topic given for task two.

Time: 30 minutes plus 10 minutes to transfer your answers

Academic and General Training candidates have the common listening test. You will hear four different texts and then answer the questions for each text at the end. Please note that each text is played only once. The texts can be a conversation between two people or a monologue. i.e. only one person speaking to give information or delivering a lecture. The questions can be multiple choice, notes/summary/table/flow-chart completion, sentence completion, short-answer questions and so on.

Time: 10-15 minutes

This part comprises an interview with an examiner. The interview is recorded. In the first part, the examiner asks you questions on your studies, hobbies and so on. In the second part, you are given a topic and some suggestions are given on that topic. You must speak for about two minutes on this topic. In the third part, the examiner will ask you some more questions on this topic.

The listening and speaking tests are common for Academic Module and General Training Module

Time: one hour

The reading test is divided into three parts. The first part has two short texts. The second part has two texts related to the workplace. The third part has a long discursive text. The question types are very similar to the question types for reading for Academic Module.

Time: one hour

There are two questions. The first question is to write a letter on a given context and should be answered in 20 minutes. The second question is like the second question in Academic Module and should be answered in 40 minutes.
